This paper discusses rehabilitation efforts at an embankment dam with an aging foundation pressure relief system. Six of the fifteen relief wells that make up the system have historically discharged water transporting some sand. The condition of the five aging wells (circa 1940s), the difficulty to access and monitor the wells, and the history of soil transport from the wells resulted in the owner implementing remedial efforts with varying levels of success. Finally in 2005, the five relief wells, which could only be accessed using confined space measures, were decommissioned. This paper discusses the events leading up to the decommissioning of the relief wells and methods used for decommissioning.
