Performance of Graphite Electrode Modified with CarbonNanomaterials for Lithium Ion Secondary Battery

Heat treated graphite particles at 1800 °C after pitch coating were used as anode base materials for lithium ion secondarybattery. The ball milling treatment was applied to graphite particles, and also carbon nanofibers were incorporated into thegraphite by mixing and ball milling. Cyclic performance, charge/discharge capacity and electrochemical performance ofvarious graphite electrodes treated differently were investigated. By the ball milling treatment of the graphite particles, aportion of graphite structure transformed from hexagonal phase to rhombohedral phase and the degree of graphitizationincreased, resulting in the increase of charge/discharge capacity. The incorporation of proper amount of carbonnanofibers into the graphite electrode improved the cyclic performance as well as the initial charge/dischargecapacity.
