Design and Evaluation of Domestic Ultrasonic Gas Meter

Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd., Osaka Gas Co., Ltd., and Toho Gas Co., Ltd. Have developed domesticultrasonic gas meters in collaboration with Yazaki Corporation, Toyo Gas Meter Co., Ltd., Aichi TokeiDenki Co., Ltd., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd., and Toshiba Corporation. An ultrasonic gasmeter is characterized by a simple structure with no mechanical moving parts. Therefore, it can beexpected to offer a more intelligent and sophisticated service to customers at lower cost than adiaphragm type gas meter in the coming ubiquitous network society.We have conducted a lot of basic experiments, computer simulations, optimization of design, variousreliability tests, and a 1.5-year field test. Moreover, the type approval to use this meter for gas dealingshas now been given by the official national measurement authorization organization in Japan. We havetherefore formulated a pilot plan to introduce the ultrasonic domestic gas meter in the summer of 2005.
