Tara gum is a clean, ground endosperm ofthe seeds of Caesalpinia spinosa. In our presentstudy tara gum was evaluated for its matrix formingability. Tablets prepared from the tara gum werefound to be optimum in physical characteristics andalso shown very good retarding effect up to 12 hrs.Drug release was found to be anomalous withrelease exponent ranging in 5-6, correlationcoefficients showed highest values for zero orderplot. Swelling study, erosion study and water frontpenetration study was carried out to further ascertainmechanism of release from the matrices. Effect ofvarious fillers was studied with results showingfastest release with lactose and slowest with DCPand MCC giving intermediate release.
