We conducted a penetration experiment with a steel target. The 120-mm-diameter, 600-mm-long, 3.0-caliber-radius-head, ogive-nose projectile was machined from tungsten alloy and designed to contain a single-channel acceleration data recorder structurally mounted within the projectile. Thus, we recorded launch accelerations in the bore of the gun and deceleration during the penetration event. The deceleration-time data were analyzed with a previously published model based on the cavity-expansion analysis. The data calculated from the formula are in good agreement with the experiment. In the meantime, in order to ensure acceleration data recorder reclaim reliably and record the full information, protective technology of acceleration data recorder is simulated with explicit finite element software ANSYS/LS_DYNA.
