Recently, a new type of ion exchange resin hasbeen commercialized, which comprises an ionexchange resin containing an adsorbent. Werefer to this resin as a "hybrid" because itcombines properties of both parent medias. Thehybrid provides enhanced selectivity andcapacity for certain substances and thereforeextends the capabilities of an ordinary ionexchanger. The hybrid we are discussingselectively removes certain oxy-anions such asarsenates, vanadates, selenates, etc. It combinesthe properties of both the base ion exchangeresin and the adsorbent material loaded into thebase resin to form the hybrid. As a result, it isnow possible to selectively remove severalcontaminants simultaneously in a single resinbed, whereas previously several resin beds ofdifferent types would have been required.Operating efficiency and run lengths have beendramatically increased. This paper discusses theproperties of a hybrid made from a base resinand metallic complex. It is used tosimultaneously remove arsenic and nitrate,arsenic and perchlorate, and/or nitrate andperchlorate. Removal of chromate, vanadateand selenate, and uranium and other substancesare also discussed.
