Molybdenum disulfide used as a lubricant and additive is a purified form of the mineral Molybdenite. Itpossesses a layer/lattice crystal structure and exhibits intrinsically low friction and excellent adherenceto most metal substrates. It is one of the best known solid lubricants and, although it originally gainedpopularity in aerospace and military applications, it is commonly found in numerous automotive, offroadand industrial greases. It is also used in specialized grease-like products known as pastes that maycontain more than fifty percent lubricating solids. This paper reviews the properties of MoS2 andapplication areas where "moly" greases are used. The various market sectors for molybdenum will alsobe discussed.
