Recent advances in software-defined radio (SDR) technologies have begun to make a myriad ofindustrial and military applications possible and cost-effective. These technologies, including hardware,software, and communication standards, are affecting a cultural change in the way that radios can beused to support operations for the better. The ability to quickly change the waveform of the radio and tosimultaneously process multiple waveforms allows users to adapt their communications to suit changingapplications without replacing hardware. This paper will discuss the hardware, software, protocols, andcultural changes that are moving us from single-use radios to communication platforms that cancombine data, voice, asset tracking, and sensing functions. Furthermore, this paper will address howthese technologies are moving us toward cognitive (or adaptive aware) radios that can adapt to theirenvironment in order to reduce cost and improve reliability. In these radios, sensors and user rules (rulesof engagement or etiquette) help determine which waveforms a radio should use for a given operation.There are several key technological challenges and significant research ongoing to make this technologya reality. These radio technologies are already being developed by the U.S. military and are on track togreatly impact the world of communication.
