An innovative Integration and Validation philosophy has been used to support the ColumbusSystem and Payload testing and verification. This consists of an overall Electrical Test Model(ETM), representing the module functionalities, based on classic EM at box level mixed withsimulators which represent the missing functionalities such as redundancies andenvironmental Subsystems (Thermal and Environmental Life Control System - ECLS). Thissystem has the advantage of not only reducing the cost but also adding flexibility and beingmore easily upgraded without compromising verification quality. The ETM approach issupported by a Proto Flight Model (PFM) combined with past qualification heritage forMechanical and ECLSS subsystems of the Multi Payloads Logistic Modules alreadydeveloped for the International Space Station (ISS). Special attention has been given to thequalification of International Standard Payload Racks (ISPR) and European commonprocured Payload equipment. The ETM has been upgraded to support ISPR qualifications notonly for present Users but also for Payloads, which will fly when the Columbus Module willbe already on orbit.
