COSMO SKYMED: TEST RELEVANCE OF AN ADVANCED SAR SATELLITEFOR DUAL USE APPLICATIONS

COSMO SkyMed is an end to end Earth Observation four satellites constellation, plus fullfeatured ground services, dedicated to remote sensing for Dual Use Applications (militaryand civilian). Main mission objective is the provision of radar imagery for intelligenceapplications by Italian Ministry of Defense entities, and for environmental monitoring byvarious institutional entities.The main instrument is a Synthetic Aperture Radar operating in the X-band. The SARpossesses multiple imaging modes, having various degrees of resolution. It also hasinterferometric and differential interferometric measurements capabilities.Since the payload, the SAR 2000 radar is a cutting edge technology development and themission is devoted to dual use, the verification activities had to be specifically tailored.The paper contains a brief overview of the satellite and of the mission altogether; it thengives a summary of the verification activities as planned to maximize effectiveness.
