The cone calorimeter developed by Babrauskas and standardised in ISO 5660 and ASTM E1354 was standardised to measure heat and smoke release from simple combustible materials such as wood, plastics and building products when burnt in air. More recently standardisation has focused on further measurement of other parameters in the cone calorimeter such as testing materials that are thermally mobile whilst testing; measuring parameters in vitiated oxygen conditions; and most recently replacement of the light sources in the optical transmission systems used for smoke measurement.
