Managing distinct generation stations presents many challenges from an operations and maintenanceperspective. Frequently, the stations within a company's generation portfolio are of different vintagesand types. This means that different types of data are available and often required to manage thesestations. Quantitative analysis and reporting is often difficult since correlation of operational data fromthe different plants and corporate financial systems cannot be readily performed. Frequently,organization structures make it difficult for groups to understand what data is captured and available.Manitoba Hydro developed an approach to address the data issues faced by most utility generationowners in a timely and cost effective manner. This approach is called the "Common Data Model". TheCommon Data Model is a conceptual data model that identifies where data should reside within theframework of the commercial application suite. It identifies what data exists and where the data resideswithin a large organization as well as the data dependencies with other business areas and externalentities. One of the benefits of the process is identifying data redundancy; I.e. where in the organizationis the same data needlessly collected. Based on the new knowledge of where data should reside, autility can identify a prioritized list of data issues and determine how the generation applicationarchitecture will evolve. A Common Data Model starts with a review of the business process, from theinception of project justification through the maintenance and retirements phases. By addressing dataissues in a prioritized manner, a utility can realize efficiencies associated with better decision-makingand coordination of work effort.This presentation consists of six sections: Introduction, Overview, Concepts, Target Common DataModel, and Conclusions.
