Cumulative installed PV capacity in Japan reached 1.1 GW in the end of 2004 as a result of continuousdissemination measures for introducing PV systems, which have been implemented according to the scale of the PVmarket. Japan has been advancing to a new stage toward full-scale deployment of PV systems for the near future. Inresponse to these circumstances, New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO)announced a roadmap for technological development of PV systems, "PV Roadmap toward 2030 (PV2030)", and theMinistry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) presented "Vision for New Energy Business" as the strategy toenhance competitive strength of the new and renewable energy industry. Both reports describe the potential of PVsystems in terms of technological development and the industrial policy. In accord with these, METI envisioned thatthe maximum installed PV capacity would reach about 83 GW in 2030 in "Energy supply and demand outlook for2030", developed as the strategy of Japan's energy policy. This paper summarizes the successful history ofdeployment and market expansion of PV system in Japan, which achieved 1 GW level of cumulative installed PVcapacity, with a focus on dissemination measures, and provides the future prospects of efforts to establish stable andsustainable PV deployment by related sectors: the national and local governments, the PV industry, utilities, endusers of PV systems, etc.
