The operation of a large number of decentralised and especially fluctuating energy generators in lowvoltage grid segments, e.g. PV installations, leads to new requirements for the management of those grids. Soreliability and power quality of the grids must not be deteriorated but better should be improved by the distributedgeneration. Also economic benefits can be reached by "intelligent use" of the energy fed-in. Within the EC researchproject "DISPOWER", Fraunhofer ISE together with partners developed a Power Flow and Power QualityManagement System (PoMS), which is operated in utility pilot installations since the beginning of 2005. From thetechnical point of view, PoMS is the combination of a central control unit "PCU" and distributed interface units"PIB", which are component specific and installed locally near each single distributed component. It could be shown,that with the use of PoMS in a pilot installation near Karlsruhe (Germany) a substantial decrease of operation costscould be achieved.
