More than 70% of the oil produced today comes frombrownfield environments such as the North Sea. Increasinglycomplex geological targets demand a more sophisticated andreliable drilling system. The combination of a slimhole rotarysteerable system (RSS) and a leading-edge geosteeringsolution can help operators optimize their well placement. Inaddition, a Web-based, real-time monitoring and data deliverysystem can produce the most accurate information possible fordecision makers onshore. In this way, an integrated team canuse modern logging-while-drilling (LWD) tools to make realtimewell path corrections in a challenging environment.This paper presents a case study in which real-timedecisions placed a well successfully and also increasedproduction levels greater than the estimates. The drillingsystem components responsible for the success were anadvanced slimhole RSS, a leading-edge real-time formationevaluation tool, and a Web-based real-time monitoring anddata delivery system.
