Numerical simulation of cutter roof failure is a daunting coal mine excavation design issue. The complex progressive failure mechanisms associated with cutter failures are extremely difficult to replicate in computer models. However, this paper shows that with a proper selection of constitute behavior and implementation of cutting sequence, it is possible to realistically reproduce cutter failure using continuum models Strain-softening material behavior and a systematic step-by-step model solving for a four-entry-and-three-crosscut model produced results that are similar to cutter patterns noticed in field. These results show that traditional modeling with geometries created in one model-step has limited applicability and may even provide misleading conclusions under some circumstances Most importantly, the proposed modeling methodology provided some insights into the reasons for the inconsistent spatial distribution of cutters often noticed in coal mines.
