The Coal-Seq Ⅱ Consortium was formed in 2005 as a followup to the Coal-Seq project, which ran from 2000-2004 and studied the feasibility of CO_2 sequestration in deep, unmineable coalseams with concomitant enhanced CBM (ECBM) recovery. The objectives of the consortium are to address technical hurdles to widespread application of the technology as identified in the initial project, specifically to develop models to better simulate the process of CO_2 injection in coal, and use them to determine which coal reservoir environments are most suitable for sequestration and ECBM, as well as to determine the best well completion and field project development strategies. The work is largely based upon new laboratory studies, coupled with theoretical and model development, with validation against existing field data, and specifically targeting the reservoir mechanisms of multi-component gas sorption, multi-component and counter-current diffusion, and CO_2-CH_4 PVT behavior. This paper presents some of the initial laboratory work being performed.
