Recent earthquakes in Turkey provided undesirable field evidence that most of the low storyresidential reinforced concrete buildings have very poor earthquake resistance. Structures collapse under theaction of earthquakes, because they do not behave well when they are subject to ground excitation. Thereforedesigners must able to imagine the dynamic behavior of the structure. The cost of reinforced concrete skeletonof the buildings is insignificant over the total cost of building construction. Little changes in the cross-sectionalsizes of the structural elements or re-adjustment of structural configuration do not change the overall cost of thebuilding, without disturbing architect’s design considerations. In this study, a classification of common seismicdesign faults is done in a comprehensible format for designers. The cost of small changes in the size and theshape of structural elements in accordance with this format are investigated with a cost-based analysis.
