Ebara had set ambitious goals for the development of a new generation waste treatment technology backin 1995: Besides detoxification of the waste, energy recovery and low emissions, the common goals ofthermal waste treatment, more features had to be implemented:? Improved recovery of metals for recycling? Vitrification of the ash for use as construction materials? Overall minimization of secondary residues for landfill? Flexibility for various solid and liquid wastes? No consumption of fossil fuels and technical oxygen to achieve these goalsThe combination of atmospheric pressure low temperature fluidized bed gasification with hightemperature ash melting was the key of the new technology, now being known as TwinRec.Following two generations of pilot plants, the first commercial plant started operation in early 2000. Now,four years later, 20 TwinRec process lines are in operation and run on a variety of industrial andmunicipal waste.In this paper, we will discuss two case studies of implementation of the new technology, one being thelargest plant for recycling of car shredder residues, the other featuring the target of 99% waste recyclingand recovery.
