The paper is prepared based on the data generated in the course of International Science and Technology Center(ISTC) Project #1216 "Risk Analysis of Rail Shipments of Nuclear Materials".The database on accidents in the USSR and the Russian Federation was developed as a result of work under theProject. Data from the database were used to analyze the accident rate during rail transportation.Computer models how containers for transportation of fissile materials behave under mechanical impactsmeeting and above IAEA requirements were developed. Computations were performed to evaluate ultimateexternal impacts.Computer models how containers for transportation of fissile materials behave under thermal impacts meetingIAEA requirements and incident conditions were developed. Computations were performed to obtain data on thecontainer condition under thermal accident impacts. Recommendations what time period is safe for a containerto stay in the fire were given.Additional organizational and technical measures enhancing railway transportation safety were developed. The procedure for assessing and analyzing risk during rail transportation of nuclear materials in Russia with thehelp of logic ?trees of events and reasons?, as well as the computer version of this procedure were developed.
