Application of Ocher Pellets to Prevent Phosphate Release from Benthic Sediment

The ocher pellets, called limnomedicine, that consist of ocher and calcium nitrate were used to suppress phosphorus release from contaminated sediment under anaerobic condition. The proposed model represents the fate and transport of nitrate released from the pellets, both in water column and sediment. Most of nitrate (83.6%) released from the pellet was consumed for degradation of organic matter and FeS in the sediment for 12 days. An increase in the amount of pellet dosage has a good effect accelerating sediment treatment rate, but produce a side effect of increased mass of nitrate diffused out to the water column. Through quantitative analysis on these effects using the proposed mathematical model, we might determine the proper usage of pellet based on sediment conditions such as organic matter contents.
