The Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean CirculationExplorer (GOCE) is dedicated to measuring the Earth’sgravity field and modelling the geoid with extremelyhigh accuracy and spatial resolution. It is the first EarthExplorer Core mission to be developed as part of ESA’sLiving Planet Programme and is scheduled for launch in2006.The program is managed by a consortium of Europeancompanies: Alenia Spazio, the prime contractor,Astrium GmbH, the platform responsible, Alcatel SpaceIndustries and Laben, suppliers of the main payloads,respectively the Electrostatic Gravity Gradiometer(EGG) and the Satellite to Satellite Tracking Instrument(SSTI), actually a precise GPS receiver.The GOCE Assembly Integration and Verification(AIV) approach is established and implemented in orderto demonstrate to the customer that the satellite designmeets the applicable requirements and to qualify andaccept from lower level up to system level.The driving keywords of "low cost" and "shortschedule" program, call for minimizing the developmenteffort by utilizing off-the-shelf equipment combinedwith a model philosophy lowering the number ofmodels to be used.The paper will deal on the peculiarities of the optimizedenvironmental test approach in the GOCE project. Inparticular it introduces the logic of the AIV approachand describe the foreseen tests at system level withinthe SM environmental test campaign, outlining theQuasi Static test performed in the frame of the SM sinevibration tests, and the PFM environmental testcampaign pinpointing the deletion of the Sine Vibrationtest on PFM model.Furthermore the paper highlights how the Model andTest Effectiveness Database (MAT€D) can be utilizedfor the prediction of the new space projects like GOCESatellite.
