Gelled polymer treatments applied in injection and productionwells are used to alter fluid flow in oil reservoirs so that oilproduction is increased and water production is decreased. Acommon gel used in field treatments is made by crosslinkingpartially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) with chromiumacetate. The initial step of the crosslink is the uptake ofchromium acetate by a carboxyl group on the HPAM. Thekinetics of the uptake reaction was studied as functions of theconcentrations of chromium, HPAM and hydrogen ion. Thedata were regressed to derive a rate expression for thedisappearance of unreacted Cr(Ⅲ) in the gelant.
