High quality alarm systems are essential to safe offshore petroleum production. The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate NPD) has carried out safety assessments of alarm systems on seven of the petroleum production installations in Norway. The assessment clearly demonstrates that poor alarm system performance and management represents the greatest human factor challenge within control room environments offshore.
