This manuscript is submitted as an addendum to SPE/IADC79797, which discussed emerging successes using a newfixed cutter bit to drill hard rock applications conventionallydrilled with roller cone bits. The new bit design usingthermostable polycrystalline (TSP) diamond cutters andstability enhancing features has produced results, particularlyin the Carthage field in Panola County, which arerevolutionizing hard rock drilling in several areas of EastTexas. The paper focuses on how teamwork, selective testingprograms, and product improvements have combined to createstep change improvements in hard-rock drilling capabilities.The paper discusses new information on optimal operatingparameters and includes case history examples.
