With the resurgence of deep gas drilling in the Gulf of Mexicospecifically on the shelf, the focus has shifted to the need fornew design in offshore drilling units. This paper will discussthe reasons for pursuing exploration in such an environment,why it is more cost effective to build new rigs instead ofmodifying existing units, and the design and equipment usedto enhance its performance.
