Ultra-wideband(UWB) radio technology has been one of the most innovative topics in wireless communications in recent years, and is currently receiving a great deal of global attention. The design of ultra-wideband antenna is a challenging task. This paper gives a brief overview of the conception and the basic characteristics of microstrip antennas, then analyzes the ways to broaden it's bandwidth. Based on the discussion of above, this paper presents a novel ultra-wideband microstrip quasi-horn antenna using wedge-shaped dielectric substrate. Simulation results clearly show that the frequency range obtained for VSWR < 2 is much wider, Gain from 7dBi at 2.8GHz to 17dBi at 14GHz and good radiation patterns. The performance trend indicates a much higher operating frequency and with the frequency increase, the antenna gain become bigger. Potential research and applications are suggested.
