Research and development is currently being conducted regarding intelligent materials, or smart structures, that recognize the environment, respond to external stimulation and repair themselves automatically, and various concepts have been proposed. Almost 50 years ago, a microcapsule was developed for use on carbonless duplicating paper. A microcapsule is composed of a cell wall and core material, and the composition can be changed as required. Microcap-sules have recently been used in the medical field for drug-delivery system, but, there has been little in the way of composite-material application. As an emerging technology, this research and development, is expected to pursue high-performance materials that have, by means of integrating highly controlled micro-encapsulation technology into fiber-reinforced composite materials, such functions as self-healing, sound insulation, vibration damping, and easy decomposition for recycling.
