This paper describes the incineration technology used to safely destroy the gaseous waste and liquidcontaining inorganic salts generated by a speciality chemicals and pharmaceuticals company in China. Theplant was designed to treat wastes containing carbon, hydrogen, sulphur and phosphorus containingcompounds with up to 10 %wt of sodium salts. Incineration of these wastes results in acid gases, moltensodium salts and sublimed phosphorus compounds. The presence of these compounds in flue gases requiresspecial attention to incineration temperatures, design and selection of energy recovery unit, and materials ofconstruction, but also the operation of downstream air pollution control system.The plant supplied composed of a downfired thermal oxidiser unit for the destruction of wastes and thecomplete oxidation of the products of combustion. Part of the hot gas from the chamber including the moltensalts enters an integral quench unit; but the rest of the gas passes through a conditioning chamber to solidifythe salts prior to entering the downstream waste heat boiler unit. On leaving the boiler the flue gas enters aquenching tower for further cooling/conditioning and then a bag filter unit. Here the SOX and salts areremoved and finally the clean gas is discharged to atmosphere.The plant was started up in 2001 and is operating today meeting its key design objectives for the destruction ofthe waste with guaranteed steam production/availability and at the same time ensuring that the final gaseousemissions are within the limits set by the local authority with zero liquid effluent discharge.
