The USFilter/Zimpro Wet Air Oxidation Process (WAO) has been studied in a laboratory and pilot plantsetting for the treatment of Recovered Chemical Warfare Materiel. This work was performed as part of the US Army Non-Stockpile Chemical Materiel Program (NSCMP). The test program, managed by Stone &Webster, included the bench testing of four chemical materials, corresponding to neutralized mustard agentand nerve agent, as well as two binary weapon components. For each of the four materials at least one WAOtest condition was found where all targeted chemical compounds were destroyed to below analytical detectionlimits. A simulant of the mustard neutralent, actual nerve agent neutralent, and neutralized quantities of twobinary weapon components were tested in a continuous flow pilot plant system where the ability to achieve thetreatment objectives was demonstrated. Suitable materials of construction for each feed material wereidentified.
