Experiments on the co-firing of high-calorific industrial wastes with paper sludge were performed in a pilotscaleindustrial waste incinerator with a nozzle-type grate system. The incineration capacity was about 160kilograms per hour. The temporal variations in the temperatures and exhaust gas emissions were monitored,and used as parameters for determining the desirable incineration. Without any auxiliary fuel, the co-firing ofpaper sludge, with high-calorific industrial wastes, alleviated CO emissions due mainly to the rapidvaporization of combustible gases from the industrial wastes and the sectional deficiency of oxygen by poormixing with air in the furnace. Because of the high nitrogen content in the sludge, the more sludge was co-fired,the higher NO emissions were measured. If the total calorific value of the input is lower than 750,000 kcal/hr,for 25 - 30% of sludge co-firing, its temperature on exiting the secondary combustion chamber may be lowerthan that of the regulation.
