Nanostructured tungsten carbide powders were synthesized by a vapor phase reaction using the precursors of tungsten ethoxide and tungsten hexacarbonyl in a helium and hydrogen atmosphere. The powder was about 10-30nm in diameter with relatively less agglomeration, which was coated by a carbon layer. The phases of the synthesized powder were W, W_2C and WC and the synthesis of the nanostuctured WC particle was promoted in a hydrogen and in a hydrogen/methane atmosphere.
