Arnold Air Force Base is the site of the Department of Defense DoD aerospace groundtest facilities known as the Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC). AEDC is acomplex of wind tunnels and other facilities for testing aircraft, jet engines, rocketmotors, and satellites. Arnold’s Test Mission Area, operated by Jacobs Sverdrup, is aCapability Maturity Model (CMM) Level 3 organization.Interest in both Spiral Development and Agile Development is growing at Arnold andelsewhere. In particular, Spiral Development is the approach now preferred by DoDleadership. Agile Development refers to methods emphasizing productivity by a softwareteam or individual. This paper describes both development approaches. It also providesdetails regarding incorporation of Spiral and Agile Development within the existing CMMLevel 3 organization. Tailoring is central to this discussion. In the final section, Conclusionsand Recommendations, lessons learned during the implementation of Sprial and AgileDevelopment into an existing CMM Level 3 process are shared with the audience.
