A COMPARISON OF ISO CERTIFIED VERSUS NON ISO-CERTIFIED COMPANIES IN MAQUILADORA INDUSTRY

The enablers of ISO certification were studied in maquiladora plants in El Paso, TX and Juarez, Mexico. Based on a 62 percent response rate and eleven in-depth interviews of eight industries, statistical analyses including reliability and validity analyses, descriptive statistics, factor analyses, and tests of hypothesis were performed. Based on factor analyses, ISO certified companies exemplified better and longer-term relationships with suppliers and greater top managerial support and employee involvement and communication than those of non-ISO certified companies. The two hypotheses developed were verified that supplier selection criteria had a positive and significant impact on the managerial support and employee involvement for ISO-certified companies while these relationships were negative for non ISO-certified companies.
