Inertial Properties of Human Heads for Ejection Test Manikin Design

Background: Current ejection test manikins used in the Air Force and Navy do not represent human heads in the areas of inertial properties such as mass, center of gravity, and moments of inertia. Inertially representative heads are required so that the helmets can be properly evaluated during impact and ejection seat testing. Hypothesis: Current manikin heads do not have accurate representations of mass properties for their human counterparts, and do not provide an adequate platform for evaluating helmet systems. Methods: Human cadaver head studies were reviewed, and data were analyzed to estimate head mass property relationships for different sized heads. Results: Representative mass properties were determined to characterize a 5th percentile female head mass, a 50th percentile small female head mass, and a 95th percentile male head mass. Conclusions: The mass properties of current ejection manikin heads do not accurately represent their human counterparts. Recommend that anthropometric manikin heads representative of humans be produced to better evaluate helmet systems.
