Instant messaging represents exchange of messages between users in near real-time. It is often used for live conversation between a group of users, where a number of small messages is exchanged between them. Routing of instant messages in the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) often takes the same route as call signaling messages. Therefore, there is a potential that the instant messaging traffic interferes with the call signaling traffic. This paper introduces a novel approach for routing of instant messages in the Session Initiation Protocol. The approach reduces the traffic when a message is sent to a group of recipients. It is based on sending of a common message for several recipients, instead of sending a separate message for each recipient. We also present simulation results in order to show the traffic reduction, which this approach obtains.
