This paper discusses various methods of increasing RF capacity of both 2G and 3G CDMA systems. It first systematically develops the theory behind forward link and reverse link RF capacity. Efforts are made to develop closed-form expressions of capacity containing those variables that exert the greatest influence over RF capacity. Based on the results obtained from the theory, the paper then explains how these variables (e.g., interference power contributed by neighboring sectors) can be manipulated in a given system to increase RF capacity. The various methods of increasing RF capacity are then described based on how these variables in a live system can be manipulated. In examining these methods, the paper makes the distinction between spatial and power methods depending on how interference power is controlled. It is argued that wireless service providers should weigh carefully between the implementations of spatial and power' methods of increasing RF capacity in a live system; this is so because of the kinds of advantages and disadvantages posed by both methods, which are also described.
