The information given in this paper can be summarized as follows: 1. The operational conditions at the frictional contact define the requirements which have to be fulfilled by the lubricants 2. If limiting operating conditions are excessive, conventional greases sometimes can no longer be used 3. The first step could be the replacement of soap thickeners against non-soap thickeners in mineral oil greases 4. In a second step, mineral oil against synthetic fluids could be exchanged 5. Advantages and disadvantages of several synthetic fluids have been defined 6. Various synthetic fluids exhibit better chemical, physical and technological properties compared to mineral oils 7. Some general and specific fields of application for synthetic high performance greases have been defined.
