MAN B&W Diesel's proven NA/S and /T9 turbocharger generation has been successfully in the market for approximately 10 years. Early in 2000, MAN B&W Diesel decided to meet the increased demands of the engine manufacturers by developing a new turbocharger generation. The investigations of the two prototype TCA77 turbochargers were already started in the middle of 2001 on the burner rig test bed and afterwards on the engine. This abstract gives an overview about the development targets and shows the TCA turbocharger programme. The design details are explained with special attention to the design features of the compressor, the turbine and the bearing concept. This paper explains MAN B&W's new containment safety concept applied to the TCA generation and shows the results of the investigations with regard to noise emissions and efficiencies.
