Process Gas Chromatographs are reliable analytical tools to measure severalcomponents in multi stream configurations. Due to the costs of ownership involved,the multi stream analyzers are typically located in shelters at strategic points withinthe process units. However, there are many additional analytical solutions that donot require the hardware and analytical flexibility traditional gas chromatographsprovide. Due to the tremendous progress in miniaturizing technology it is possibleto have versatile modular analytical systems of basketball size suitable for processenvironment that can be located right next to the sampling point without the typicalinfrastructure required. By successfully addressing installation, environment,maintenance and service issues, such a chromatographic system opens an entirenew world of applications. Greatly reducing utility requirements, locating theanalytical device close to the sampling point and minimizing sample flow canachieve high result frequency and very beneficial total cost of ownership impact.Consequently, such a device permits the utilization at sampling points and forapplications not yet considered.Of course such smaller analyzer modules can be utilized for process monitoring inshelters, the potential benefits are for mounting directly at remote sampling pointsor where long sample lines would lead to sample composition changes. Also ofadvantage are sampling points that are very beneficial for optimum process controlespecially during process start up and upsets.
