The POLRO, a 2-support kiln with special technology, has proved since its market introduction in 1995 that it can be utilised without restriction for the entire range of precalci-nation kilns with a length to diameter ratio of 10 to 15. The special technology of the POLRO with its statically determined supporting system prevents overloads on the kiln shell and kiln stations even under extreme operating conditions. Of the six POLROs which are in successful operation, 5 have a L/D ratio of 13.6 and one of 12.5. The customers who are operating the kilns with a greater fraction of secondary fuel report that an even longer kiln would have been of greater advantage. The customer response is positive regarding the new mechanics of the POLRO with self-adjusting supporting rollers, direct drive via the supporting rollers on the inlet-side kiln station, and the splined tyres with increased design clearance which also transmit the driving torque. The high availability of the mechanical system of the kiln has convinced our customers of this drive concept. The enlarged overhangs at the kiln inlet and kiln outlet are non-critical for all components and for the kiln lining. However, operating experience with the first POLROs also revealed some necessary design improvements. The casting quality of the driven tyres is one such point. All operating experience and reports from the plant operators have led to further development of the POLRO, resulting in an improved price/performance ratio in addition to the optimising measures carried out on the core elements. Further POLROs with the optimised design will be commissioned in 2004.
