In the present paper, the mean wind speed profile at a particular urban site is geometrically estimated using Geographical Information System (GIS). Mean wind speed profiles at some urban sites in Japan are estimated using two existing geometrical methods. The source area model proposed by Schmid and Oke (1990) is adopted to consider the heterogeneity of urban roughness elements. The estimated wind profiles are compared with the field observation data. The existing geometrical estimates fail to agree with the mean wind speed profile at densely built-up areas, so the revised geometrical method should be proposed. Therefore, one dimensional surface roughness model is proposed using a rectangular pulse process based on alternating renewal process, which can represent the complexity of real urban roughness.
