The interaction of Quil A, cholesterol and phospholipid for the formation of ISCOMs and other colloidal structures prepared by a hydration method was investigated by varying the amount of each component. Depending on the relative ratio of each component, electron microscopy revealed the following structures: ISCOMs, ISCOM-like structures, liposomes, liposomes containing micelles and/or ISCOMs, helical, ring-like, and worm-like micelles and lamellae structures. Some of the structures observed in this study may be important as colloidal vaccine delivery systems.
