For low velocity particle impacts, the various theoretical regimes, and the coefficient of restitution, are approximately functions of the scaled initial relative velocity v0/c0 and Y/E, where v0, c0, Y, E are the initial velocity, compressional wave speed, yield pressure and Young’s modulus of elasticity. The compressional wave speed for colliding spheres is a function of the elastic modulii, densities and diameters of the two spheres, implying that the coefficient of restitution depends on both velocity and the aspect ratio. Experiments conducted to demonstrate this dependence have highlighted the destructive nature of such tests, and the manner in which results depend on the order of experimentation.
