Two weathering procedures are being developed by the AcidDrainage Technology Initiative in cooperation with federal agencies(OSM and EPA). Objects are to: (1) standardize existing humiditycell and leaching column procedures; (2) improve test methods bymaintaining a carbon dioxide enriched environment needed tooptimize carbonate mineral dissolution, and quantifying particle sizevariables to evaluate reaction kinetics, and (3) provide flexibility intest method implementation consistent with EPA guidelines forPerformance-Based Measurement Systems. Preliminary resultsindicate the CO_2 enriched leaching environments produce alkalinitiesthat are similar to field observations and greater than the tests rununder atmospheric PCO_2. Leaching columns produce higheralkalinity than humidity cells.
