The paper is concerned with the problem of energy transfer that takes place between a simple 1 DOF resonator (master) and a cluster of parallel oscillators attached to it. The master behaves as a damped oscillator due to the energy release towards the cluster, thus exhibiting an apparent damping. The paper is addressed to two main points: how the apparent damping, i.e. the parameter controlling the energy flow rate, can be identified and secondly under which conditions the energy transfer from the master to the cluster can be considered permanent or irreversible.
