MEASUREMENT OF THE RESISTANCE OF THE INSULATORS USED IN PLATINUM RESISTANCE THERMOMETERS

The insulating resistance of the alumina and quartz insulators used in high temperature standard platinum resistance thermometers (HTPRTs) is measured. A resistance measurement system for low applied voltages is developed, and measurements were made employing this system. The insulating resistance decreases at a rate of approximately 1 decade /100°C, and values have been found of 1 and 40 MΩ at 1000°C for quartz and alumina specimens, respectively.
