PRESTRESSED CONCRETE WATER TANK SEISMIC UPGRADES

An account of how a major water utility has begun to seismically upgrade its large inventory of aging prestressed concrete water distribution reservoirs. A brief description of East Bay Municipal Utility District's large inventory of prestressed concrete tanks and the need for seismic upgrade. The seismic hazards within the district are defined and the typical potential failure modes of the tanks are illustrated. Various retrofit schemes are described including construction photos of completed projects. Discussion of non-seismic components impacted by and improved in conjunction with the seismic upgrade work.
