Ladle Turret Slewing Bearing Replacement Metallurgical Length Extension at Wheeling - Pittsburgh Steel Corporation

The project work conveyed in this paper highlights maintenance and installation work which allowed for two important ingredients in any successful operating facility to be achieved; namely, continued equipment reliability and increased production capacity without sacrificing the quality of the as-cast product. Both of these objectives were met with the successful completion of this project at Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp. With the foresight of those decision-making individuals at Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp., the ladle turret slewing bearing was replaced before a catastrophic failure could have occurred following almost 17 years of service. Furthermore, a slab-casting machine, which was designed and then commissioned in 1983 with the provisions in place to allow for an increase in the metallurgical length and thereby increase production with the addition of two new segments, had also come to fruition.
