IEC 61511 - Functional Safety: Safety Instrumented Systems for the Process Industry Sector

The International Standard on Safety Instrumented Systems (IEC 61511) will go out forfinal vote for acceptance in 2002 by all countries including the United States. Based onconversations with a number of ANSI/ISA S84.01 committee members, the belief is thatthe USA will vote to accept this standard. Once the United States has voted to accept thisinternational standard, the next task will be to rewrite the existing ISA S84.01 standardsuch that it reflects the contents of IEC 61511.This new international standard contains a number of new requirements that addressmanagement, classification, design, installation, operation and maintenance of SafetyInstrumented Systems (SIS). This presentation will review some of the major differencesbetween the existing USA national standard (ANSI/ISA S84.01) and the newinternational standard (IEC 61511) that will most likely become our new nationalstandard.
